Week 4 - Negative space and Shading techniques.

Updated: Dec 29, 2022

Shading techniques

I tried some shading techniques. Personally, I prefer cross hatching. I found drawing with circulism would made the painting more darker than other techniques.

Negative Space Drawing

I used negative space to draw my right hand.

Drawing Processes

The first step was drawing the contour of my hand. I put my hand on the sketch book to get the real size of it.

I start to shade the negative space. 2B pencil was used.

The shading/negative space looks rough. Napkin was used to smudge the shading part to make it looks more natural.

Finally, Eraser was used to clear the boundary between negative space and position space. I think it would work another way around like shading the whole page first, then use eraser to "draw" in the negative space. To me, the shading part was really a big work.

Another work

I picked a shoe in my collection and tried to draw it. Unfortunately, I didn't record the whole process of drawing. Through the process, I found that I have problems with drawing the shades of the head side of the shoe. It is too black, and I didn't draw correctly with the shape of this shoe.

I think I should observe it and try to understand the structure of the object before I draw. Just like what we were talking about in the week3 classes.

What's more is that for the shading, I think I should get a better arrangement before I draw. Like which part is the darkest, and which part is the lightest.

Thank you
